Abstract:
PURPOSE / THESIS: Self-tracking is the practice of obtaining various data about themselves by individuals, primarily using mobile devices and related applications. The function of self-tracking is to improve health, efficiency, organization of various activities, etc. The article puts forward the thesis that its impact on the lives of modern people is greater; self-tracking becomes an important instrument for shaping their identity.
RESEARCH CONCEPT / METHODS: The analysis is based on theoretical and empirical literature on the issue of self-tracking. The considerations in the article are illustrated with examples taken from existing sources and own observations.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Self-tracking holds the promise of getting to know your body and mind in depth – thus discovering and, as far as possible, transforming your identity. This practice gives the impression of a better, more effective control of one’s life (especially one’s body), and thus – broadening the possibilities of creating identity. And probably to some extent it actually helps to achieve these goals. Quantified Self technologies, however, create the appearance of access to “pure” knowledge, ie not mediated by any arbitrary expert system, and based on raw empirical data and thus certain. This property of them may lead to excessive trust in their indications.
ORIGINALITY / Cognitive Value: The topic of self-tracking / Quantified Self is current, poorly recognized in Polish literature, and cognitively significant, if only because of the prevalence and development of this phenomenon.
